Would you like to have a fresh abundant supply of your favorite herbs? Why not try growing your own herbs from seeds. After all, it’s easy, inexpensive and lot’s of fun. If you start in the spring, you’ll have a generous supply of fresh herbs to include in your favorite recipes by summer.

Probably the hardest part of growing herbs from seeds is deciding which herbs to grow. The best advice is to start with the herbs you like or use the most. Some of my favorites are parsley, chives, basil and wheatgrass.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned gardener, growing herbs from seeds will reward you handsomely in personal satisfaction and potential health benefits.

In getting started, one of the first things you want to do is visit the garden center for a little advice and growing material recommendations. You’ll need to purchase a few items such as seed trays with plastic covers, garden sieve to prepare a soil-less medium with, a water sprayer and some flower pots to transfer the seedlings into once they’ve started their accelerated growth.

After you have all your growing materials, you’ll need to fill you seed trays with the soil-less compost. Use the water sprayer to wet the seed trays and dampen the compost. Place several seeds in each cell of the seed tray and cover with finely sieved soil-less compost. (Seeds should not be buried deep…say approximately 1/4 finger depth) Use the water sprayer a second time and cover the seed trays with the plastic cover. Label each tray to identify the herb you’re growing. Place the newly planted seeds on a window sill or in greenhouse and cover with black plastic or newspaper. Remove the covering after the seeds germinate and make sure they are exposed to indirect sunlight not direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist. Once the herbs have grown into a hardy young plant (couple of  inches), transplant them into to the flower pots and finally into your garden.

Harvest in the summer making sure you retain enough leaves to allow the herbs to continue to grow. Job well done, I knew you could do it. Now go show off that green thumb!
